Many dental experts believed that the proper training on how to take care of our teeth takes place in our respective homes. Properly cleaning and flossing our teeth and consulting our dental hygienist regularly can help us avoid acquiring tooth decay and other kinds of gum problems.

It is best to keep yourself from having this types of dental disorders rather than treating them. It is necessary to take away dental plaque, a transparent layer of bacteria that covers the teeth to keep yourself away from tooth decay. Brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing it once a day is a good practice that can help you remove plaque. Brushing strengthens the gums making it become more healthy and lessen the risk of acquiring some gum problems. Brushing and flossing are the most important things that you can do to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Toothpastes contain abrasives, detergents, and foaming agents. Fluoride, the most common active ingredient in toothpaste, is what prevents cavities. So be very sure that you purchase toothpaste that has flouride.

One person out of ten is said to have a fast production of tartar on the teeth. Tartar refers to the consolidated amount of plaque on the teeth that can be more destructive and difficult to get rid of. Aside from using anti-tartar toothpastes, it would be best if you spend some time in brushing your teeth particularly in the areas near the salivary glands, the exterior part of the upper back teeth and the inside of the lower front teeth to avoid the formation of new tartar.

Using toothpastes that are for sensitive teeth is recommended to use especially those having teeth that are sensitive to heat, cold and pressure. But you'll still need to talk to your dentist about your sensitivity because it may indicate a more serious problem, such as a cavity or nerve inflammation. Dental care experts said that that the time you have to spend in brushing your teeth should be at least two minutes, two times a day.

Learning the proper method of brushing one's teeth is essential to avoid harming the teeth. In brushing, hold your brush at a 45-degree angle against your gumline. Brush your teeth in a gentle manner, from where the tooth and gum meet towards the chewing surface in brief strokes. Avoid brushing your teeth so hard as it may damage the gums and cause tooth sensitivity and worse, loosen the teeth. Perform the same proper method in brushing the inside and outside part of the teeth. Clean the chewing areas of the teeth by doing brief sweeping strokes, tipping the bristles into the pits and crevices. Clean the interior part of your top and bottom front teeth and gums by holding the brush in almost vertical position. Moving back and forth, bring the front part of the brush over your teeth and gums. Using a forward-sweeping motion, gently brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth to remove the decay-causing bacteria that exist in these places. Enjoy brushing your teeth while playing your favorite song or even use an egg timer for about two to three minutes.
